Unsaturated Polyester Resin Prepregs in the Composite Market
Pre-impregnated carbon, glass or aramid fibres are called prepreg.
This definition is short for "Pre-impregnated". Although epoxy prepregs commonly used today meet the required strength specifications, they often fail to satisfy manufacturers in terms of cost, storage and production speed.
To address this gap in the sector and meet emerging demand, polyester prepregs have begun to be used. Four key characteristics distinguish polyester prepreg from others:
1. Raw Material: EZ-Preg prepregs use unsaturated polyester resin as raw material. This feature significantly reduces costs and provides manufacturers substantial economic benefits in serial and rapid production. Additionally, it increases product variety (ortho, iso, hybrid, etc.).
2. Fibre/Resin Ratio: In hand lay-up methods, resin content reaches 70–80% relative to fibres. This results in high resin consumption, increases part weight and negatively affects strength. However, in polyester prepregs this ratio can be adjusted as required and customer needs are met optimally.
3. Cure System: One of the fundamental characteristics distinguishing this system from others is that curing is achieved through LED lamp light. Thanks to its specially formulated single-component resin, the system requires no catalyst and curing is achieved using an LED device integrated within the system.
4. Cure Time: Another key characteristic is that cure time is significantly shorter than other methods. The produced part is cured in as little as 5 minutes using the LED device employed.
Since no catalyst is used, the gel time of the system remains very long under normal conditions until LED light is applied, preventing unwanted, premature curing.
